Is it a problem that my son put .5 quart of lawnmower oil into the gas tank?

What might happen to the mower? Is it a problem that my son put .5 quart of lawnmower oil into the gas tank?
If you haven't run it you need to drain the fuel from the tank and refill with the proper straight gas.

To drain; find the hose that's coming from the tank and disconnect. try to catch as much fuel as possible using a small bowl. Discard fuel properly or add it back into the gas can that's mixed.

If it's been run than you have introduced oil into the system which will result in smoking sputtering and possibly stalling.

1/2 a quart of oil is allot so the fuel lines and carburetor need to be cleaned as much as possible if run.

The tank needs to be drained regardless.

Residual oil in the system will smoke a bit but nothing to become alarmed over; it will stop smoking in a few minutes.

The spark plug will most likely need a cleaning or you can just buy a new one(5 bucks)

If your a DIY'r you can do all this yourself, if not get it to a small engine repair shop.

You may have oil pooled in the carburetor. Most carbs have a small screw/bolt on the bottom allowing you to drain them and/or pull the bowl cover(small round cup looking thing) off and drain it. Do that, and spray carb cleaner inside. Make sure you use fresh gas in the tank at least for this tankful. Is it a problem that my son put .5 quart of lawnmower oil into the gas tank?
You will have to drain that oil from the gas tank.Pull the spark plug and clean it.Drain any oil from the cylinder (while plug out).fill with good gas.prime and start(it may take a couple of trys. When it does start there will be a LOT!! of smoke coming out.(enough to tell neighbors you are fogging for mosquitoes so they don't call the fire dept). But it will clear up and be ok.
You'll spew alot of smoke and leave oil deposits in the carburetor.

I'd try to empty the tank, clean it out as much as you can, and fill with fresh gas before running the engine.
