Usually a sticky Hydraulic Valve Lifter (aka Tappet) because varnish has built up in it. If it has solid lifters, it's normal to have that, as long as it goes away when warmed up. Another possibility is an Oil Filter which does not have an anti-drainback valve, which lets the oil drain out when the engine is shut off, and it takes a moment for the oil pressure to build back up. This will only last a few seconds at most, whereas varnished Hydraulic Lifters could take up to a few minutes to loosen up.
Varnished Hydraulic Lifters can be loosened up by adding a little Automatic Transmission Fluid to the crankcase. It is very similar to motor oil, except it has a much higher level of detergents. Add it where you usually put the oil in if you're low, or drain some oil out before you add it, so you don't end up over the full mark.
15%-20% of the total oil capacity is plenty (like up to a Quart at a time total for a car that takes 5 Quarts for an oil change) You can go ahead and drive the car with this mix, to give it plenty of time to do it's work. If you use Rislone or something like that, you shouldn't operate the car under load, which is one of the reasons I prefer using ATF.
As far as the Oil Filters, sometimes if you use a different brand than the original, they just sell you one that does fit, but might not have an anti-drainback valve which that particular engine might need. Short of looking up whether it has that particular feature or not, I usually try to use AC/Delco for GM's, Motorcraft for Ford's etc.. Bosch is used on a lot of European cars from the factory, or ask one of the older guys at the parts store if you're not sure. When you start your car in the morning and it ticks until it warms up what could be the problem if it has oil.
when your car sits overnight the oil drains down into the pan, and when you start it it has to circulate through the engine again and you usually hear ticking until it is circulated, maybe you need to use a different oil, maybe synthetic, it sticks to the engine parts longer than cheaper oils. When you start your car in the morning and it ticks until it warms up what could be the problem if it has oil.
bad lifter provided it's not OHC,if so your probably getting ready to blow up.
Could be the tappets. Have them checked/adjusted and if it still persists, get your main bearings checked.
its just a lifter. its not pumping up fast enough.
needs a oil change or its the lifters
