My van is a 2001 model lwb hi roof and has covered 95k miles, yet has oil leak from engine, noisy tappets, vague steering which causes wandering on motorway - are all VW's like this ? should i have bought a transhit or sprinter ?Does any one run a VW LT35 Van (2001 model type) and know of any inherent problems eg engine oil leaks etc?
I've got a 2001 type4 transporter and it's exactly what a VW should be! It's got 140,000 miles on the clock and been regurlarly serviced. previous owners were retired teachers, so it was driven sensibly!
It did need a bot of work done whenI bought it, Catalytic converter needed replaced (expensive!) and leak from somewhere (can't remember exactly) which meant the cam belt needed changed. Apart from that it's very reliable and a pleasure to drive.
I did drive a LT recently, a very badly treated hire van with only 60k on the clock, the gears were messy, but apart from that it was ok.
As it's a hi-roof I'd suggest this was partly the reason for wandering on motorways due to side winds, I bet it's more noticeable when unladen.
oil leaks happen with all engines, transits are notorious for them, and for smoking badly. Sprinters are are dreams, but expensive so fix the oil leak, check the suspension, as that could also be a factor in drifting/wandering on motorways and be happy you aint got a trannie!
