Can using the wrong oil filter cause problems?

I just had my oil changed by a friend and not Walmart for the first time since I had the car and he realized that it had the wrong oil filter. Can this cause damage to my car? We couldn't figure out why my oil pressure light kept coming on, could it all be because of the filter being too big. I still have all of my receipts from the past 3 years of getting my oil changed at Walmart, should they be responsible for any damages? Can using the wrong oil filter cause problems?
yes wrong filter can hurt engine

are you sure its wrong,,,all makers have different numbers and some r even different sizes but still correct filter

damage hard to prove the lite being on doesn't mean the filter did it

how many miles? and tell us engine...filter that was wrong and correct filter #...maybe we can discover something

how it run??Can using the wrong oil filter cause problems?
If it was a case of you driving five miles from the shop, the light coming on, and you immediately turning around to get it fixed, you cold definitely hold them responsible. By driving around for six months with the check engine and oil light coming on, you have failed to mitigate the possible damages. They will likely claim that you compounded the damages by not getting the problem fixed sooner.
There is no way you can have the wrong oil filter unless they put one on that is not the right size for you car. At that point.... yes you will have problems since the oil will leak out and no oil for the engine, well I'm sure you know what can happen. If WalMart did something like that and you did damage the engine... they are responsible to repair the engine.
wel there is a few cars that can take more than one type big or a small one neither woul d really hurt other than one not cleaning oil as wel as the other most of time if its wrong one it leaks then yes it woul d be a big problem and yes if you could prove it was them and what makes a oil light comne on it a oil sending unit which wouldnt have anything to do with filter say it does it when your stopping or at a light but when you give it gas it goes off most likey a sending unit cost about 20 buck easy to unscrew and screw back in might take ten minutes and you could replace that yourself an dyou coul dgo to autozone.com and type in your info and look up place price and get a how to install it real easy and most likely the problem not what type of filter if it dont leak its good
Yes damage could occur. Did your friend put the wrong filter on it? Or are you saying WalMart put the wrong filter on it the last time the oil was changed? Either way you should of stopped driving the car as soon as the light came on and had it checked out.
No wrong side is not gone work.Your car may need the oil sending switch....
