DEAR DR. GOTT: I am very interested in your Certo and grape-juice remedy for arthritis, but I am not able to find Certo in any of the stores. Can you tell me where I can find it? How often do I need to take it, and how much of the two ingredients do I need?
DEAR READER: Certo is a brand of pectin, a product used in the making of jams and jellies. It should be available in grocery stores. Any brand works.
The dosage is 1 or 2 teaspoons of pectin mixed in a glass of purple grape juice taken two or three times a day for the pain of arthritis.
This combination is not 100 percent effective in all who try it. Should that be the case, I advise trying odorless castor oil rubbed onto the painful joint twice a day. If that, too, is ineffective, the next step is to try ibuprofen or, as a last step, a prescription drug, such as Mobic or Celebrex.Dr. Gott mentioned the castor oil rub and/or grape juice with pectin for hip problems. How does it worik?
I'm not sure if it does... Any kind of rub is beneficial for moderate pains, but it's not a cure.
