I have a 2001 Dodge RAM 4x4 with A 5.2 (318). I am having oil pressure problems, when I start it up oil pressure is ok till I start to drive it and the truck temp gets up to 180 than at stops the pressure drops to 0 as long as the rpm's are above 1200 oil pressure is fine, could cam bearings or rings go bad on a truck that only has 57000 miles on it. I use Mobile 1 full synthetic oil every 7000 miles since I had the first oil change.2001 Dodge RAM 318 oil pressure problems?
Sounds like you are having trouble with the oil pump and possibly the bearings could be worn. It just depends on your driving style and 7,000 miles may be too long for an oil change as oil life only lasts according to your driving habits and your usual commute environment. Dirt roads, Short trips, frequent stop and go are harsh on engine oil.
Also agree with above pressure test wont hurt.2001 Dodge RAM 318 oil pressure problems?
I just had the same problem.
Replaced head gaskets, drove into town. After it warmed up, pressure dropped to zero. Found it was leaking at the intake manifold's cork gasket near the pressure sender.
Pulled off the manifold, used new gaskets and plenty of Ultra Copper.... now it wouldn't drop to zero, but would be ';borderline'; -- just barely making the light come on at idle.
Mine was a combination of that bad cork gasket, and fried piston rings from overheating.
I'd first try changing the oil pressure sensor but I'd also check the wiring going to it too. From there if you've still problems I'd try to call up the dealership or look online on their site to check for any recall or service bulletin issues related to that problem exist.
Hope that helps and best of luck.
you need to run a manual gage on it to verify that its actually loosing oil pressure it could just be a bad sending unit causing the gage to show low oil pressure on it,id replace the sending unit first and see if that helps it any at all, good luck.
Sounds like a gauge problem, if your oil pressure was really fluctuating like that you should be experiencing other problems.
